The U.S. 87th Infantry Division is a military unit within the United States Army. It was formed during World War II as part of the buildup for the D-Day invasion in June 1944. The division saw action in various campaigns, including Northern France, Ardennes, Central Europe, and Rhineland. After the war, it was deactivated but reorganized and activated again during the Cold War. Throughout its history, the 87th Infantry Division has been known by several names such as the ‘Palm Beach Division’, the ‘Men of the Eighty-Seventh’, and the ‘Lucky 87th’. It is currently under the operational command of the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command.
