This ornate carving was crafted as a lintel in Hebei, northern China circa 1900. It, among others of its kind, was used to accentuate the entrance of the homes of wealthy families. A captivating scrolling lattice design, with imagery of six Chinese elders or gods, adorns the center of the lintel. The central section of the lintel is set into a frame, featuring illustrations of mythical lions or foo dogs representing protection ornamenting the feet of the frame. Towards each end and centrally at the bottom rests a winged beast, speculated to be a bat an emblem of luck. Visually appealing, the lintel is sure to provide a stunning addition to any household.
