The 492nd Special Operations Wing (AFSOC) is a tactical air force unit of the United States Air Force. It is part of Air Force Special Operations Command and is stationed at RAF Mildenhall, England. This wing’s primary mission involves conducting special operations air support, including infiltration, exfiltration, close air support, air interdiction, and airlift missions for U.S. Special Operations Forces worldwide. The 492nd SOW operates MC-130J Commando II aircraft, which provide low-level, long-range, and special mission capabilities. The unit’s motto is “First In, Last Out.” The 492nd SOW has a rich history dating back to World War II and has seen service in numerous conflicts since then, including Vietnam, Operation Just Cause, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom.
