Established on August 15, 1943, during World War II, it has since undergone several redesignations and reassignments but maintains a rich history of service. Originally equipped with P-38 Lightnings, the squadron saw combat in the European Theater from 1943 to 1945.Post-World War II, the 302nd has been stationed at various bases across the United States and overseas, adapting to changes in aircraft technology and military strategy. Notable assignments include Operation Desert Storm (1990-1991) and Operation Enduring Freedom (2001-present).Currently, the 302nd Fighter Squadron is assigned to the 56th Fighter Wing at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. The squadron operates the F-35A Lightning II, one of the most advanced multirole fighters in the world.
