The 2d Special Operations Squadron (2d SOS) is a specialized unit within the United States Air Force (USAF). This squadron operates under the Air Combat Command (ACC) and is part of the 16th Special Operations Wing, stationed at Hurlburt Field, Florida. Its primary mission involves conducting night infiltration, exfiltration, and airborne insertion/extraction operations with low-visibility aircraft, primarily the MC-130H Combat Talon II. The 2d SOS also provides tactical airlift support for special operations forces, as well as offering support to other U.S. military branches and allied forces. The squadron’s history dates back to World War II, where it was initially established as the 81st Troop Carrier Squadron. Over the years, its missions have evolved, but its commitment to supporting special operations and delivering critical personnel and supplies remains a constant.
