The Arts & Crafts movement, which started in England, brought together painters, sculptors, architects and craftsmen, and its main idea was to create applied art and return to craft traditions. Members of the movement opposed industrial and mechanical production in favor of the revival of handmade art. For representatives of the Arts & Crafts movement, the value was to be the usefulness and functionality of art, while maintaining its aesthetic values.

The Arts & Crafts movement was founded in 1888 by English artists Walter Crane and C.R. Ashbee. The movement was led by the famous painter, architect, draftsman and writer, William Morris. Arts & Crafts members have established their own artisanal school – Guild and School of Handicraft.

The activities of the Arts & Crafts movement had a huge impact on European and American art at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In many countries, craft workshops imitating the English group were established, such as the Vienna Workshops, The Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston.
