The Air Force District of Washington (AFDW) is a major command within the United States Air Force (USAF). It provides mission support to 10 USAF commands, three Department of Defense agencies, and five interagency organizations located in the National Capital Region (NCR), which includes Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. The AFDW manages approximately 750 facilities and 60,000 military personnel, civilian employees, and contractors to ensure the safety, security, and readiness of these crucial organizations. It also provides ceremonial support for various events at the White House, Capitol, and Pentagon. The AFDW was established in 1947 as a response to the need for centralized management of military operations in the NCR during peacetime and war.
