The 555th Fighter Squadron is a unit of the United States Air Force, known for its historic role in various conflicts. Originally formed during World War II as a P-51 Mustang fighter squadron in Europe, the 555th later transitioned to T-33 Shooting Star trainer aircraft and was deactivated.Reactivated during the Vietnam War, the 555th served as a fighter squadron with the F-100 Super Sabre and then the F-4 Phantom II. Notably, it became one of the first Air Force squadrons to be predominantly composed of African American airmen, famously known as the “Tuskegee Airmen.”In more recent times, the 555th is a part of the active duty Air Combat Command, operating out of Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. The squadron currently flies the F-22 Raptor, one of the U.S.’s most advanced fighter aircraft. The 555th continues its service, maintaining readiness for air defense and air superiority missions.
